Topographic map have some natural graphic beauty that any designer will notice. Wood patterns are also a thing of beauty. What’s less common is to blend the two and use the wooden patterns as if they were topographic lines.

That’s the wonderful idea Greg Klassen had, to create tables that also look like natural topographic maps, with a curvy river flowing in the middle. The furniture designer works with pieces of discarded trees that he aligns to mimic the riverside. The table is completed with a piece of glass cutted to match the river shape.

The tables are available to buy on his online shop, but you better be ready to spend some big money, because quality and high-end handcraft come with a price.

With less wood and more glass, Duffy London created this beautiful “Abyss table”. They take many layers of wood and glass to create a table that looks like ocean topography.

Apple stops Aperture, Adobe will invest further in Lightroom

Apple on June 27^th announced that it will no longer be developing Aperture, its professional-level photo organization and editing software for OS X Yosemite. It seems that Apple is now approaching for a new application with more functionality and features as today, there are several new photo apps which are exceptional.

Apple spokesperson said that "With the introduction of the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library, enabling you to safely store all of your photos in iCloud and access them from anywhere, there will be no new development of Aperture. When Photos for OS X ships next year, users will be able to migrate their existing Aperture libraries to Photos for OS."

During the WWDC keynote, it was also said that users of OS X will be soon transitioned to Photos, a new app that will be released next year.

Whereas on the other hand, Lightroom, the competitor of Aperture that is available as part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography subscription program provides users access to the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop CC for $9.99 per month. Now here is the huge difference in Aperture user and Lightroom since Aperture users cost $79.99.

Digital imaging executive Winston Hendrickson said in a blog post, “Put simply we’re doubling down on our investments in Lightroom and the new Creative Cloud Photography plan and you can expect to see a rich roadmap of rapid innovation for desktop, web and device workflows in the coming weeks, months and years. We also continue to invest actively on the iOS and OSX platforms, and are committed to helping interested iPhoto and Aperture customers migrate to our rich solution across desktop, device and web workflows.”

Nevertheless, all we can say is Apple might be adopting the best photography-related applications that will become more streamlined than ever. And for both iPhotos and OS X, Photos will be the new standard for photo processing.

Krita, the open source painting software, get funded on Kickstarter

When you think of an open-source alternative to Photoshop, the first word that is usually pronounced is Gimp. Although Gimp is great software, I could not get used to it, even when trying out Gimpshop.

Thanks to a recent Kickstarter campaign, I downloaded and tested Krita for a while. It doesn’t do everything Photoshop does, but I’d go as far as saying that it is better if you are creating digital paintings. If you ever worked with image editing software, Krita is very easy to get your hands on, and a very powerful tool for digital artists.

The good news: Krita is about to get even better. Their fundraising campaign is not over yet, but they have already reached their goal. That means that a member of their team will dedicate some time to add new functionalities even quicker.

To make it quick, here are some of the new features that I’m really excited to see added on the software: cage transform, liquify transform, new layer styles, editable file layer, or shaped gradients.
